GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- A police officer shot a man who was wielding two knives Friday in northwest Indiana.
Deputies said it all unfolded after Gary police stopped a car near a gas station.
The shooting happened around 3 p.m. near 21st Avenue and Malcolm X Drive in Gary, Lake County, Indiana officials said.
Gary police officers conducted a traffic stop at the All Star gas station when moments later a man in a white SUV who was not involved in the traffic stop exited his vehicle. He was holding two knives and approached the officers, Lake County officials said.
A Gary police officer shot his weapon and wounded the man, Lake County officials said. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment in unknown condition.

No officers were injured in the incident, the Gary Police Department said.
The officer will be placed on administrative leave, which is department policy.
"Our department approaches this incident with the utmost seriousness," Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon said in a news release. "The safety of our citizens remains our top priority, and I ask for the public's patience as the facts are gathered on this case. We're committed to transparency and are fully cooperating with the Lake County Sheriff Department's investigation."
The Lake County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the police-involved shooting.
