Suspect dies after shootout with suburban officers: police
Hickory Hills police said a suspect died after getting into a shootout with officers near 95th Street and Roberts Road Thursday night.

HICKORY HILLS, Ill. (WLS) -- A suspect died after a shootout with police officers in southwest suburban Hickory Hills Thursday night.

The shooting occurred at about 8:45 p.m. in a gas station parking lot near 95th Street and Roberts Road.

It was quite a terrifying scene for drivers and people walking around the area, which is often a busy intersection. Some witnesses shared video with ABC7 as they sat in traffic while officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect who is now dead.

Police said officers responded to a report of an armed robbery and located a suspect fleeing on foot. The suspect was armed with a handgun and fired at an officer, who returned fire, police said.

Police said the suspect continued shooting while fleeing into an alley, where officers found him with a gunshot wound to the head.

The suspect was transported to Advocate Christ Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The suspect's identity has not been released yet.

An officer was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, where the officer was treated and released.

Cell phone video from witnesses nearby showed the moment police got into a shootout with the suspect at the Speedway gas station.

In the video, suspect appears to turn around and appears to fire shots at officers. After that, police returned fire, and the suspect was shot. Later in that video, more gunshots can be heard.

When it all was unfolding, the area was packed with people in the gas station parking lot as well as surrounding roads. One driver had a gunshot go right through their windshield, but no one inside that vehicle was hurt.

The Hickory Hills Police Department, the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force, and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the use of force in the case.
