Police got the 911 call just before 8 a.m. A 64-year-old man was stabbed while getting out of a white van, which was parked in an alley in the 2400-block of West Gladys Avenue.

"I seen the fire truck, policemen. They shot past me," said neighbor Billy Baber.

According to Chicago Fire Department sources, the victim was stabbed 11 or 12 times. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, where he was transported to by ambulance.

And while his identity has not yet been released, initial reports indicate he may have been working on a nearby property.

One nearby neighbor, who did not want to be identified, spoke with ABC7.

"I usually see them outside, the six of them. They just come out there, and they do their job. They're not bothering anybody. So, I think it's really sad. All you're trying to do is make a living," the neighbor said.

Police, at this point, have not indicated whether the attack was targeted or random, saying only that the victim got into a verbal altercation with someone who approached him and produced a knife before stabbing him several times. The suspect then ran away, heading southbound on Western.

While police are not commenting on the circumstances surrounding the arrest, dispatch communications indicate that the suspect was seen on camera heading toward the nearby CTA Blue Line station.

Area Four detectives are investigating.
